Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
