During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
